Missouri families have more online high school options than most states. Tuition-free public programs, accredited private schools, virtual education through MOCAP – there’s a lot to choose from. The right school depends on what the diploma needs to do and what kind of structure the learner actually needs.
Missouri has two tracks: public and private. Public programs (Missouri Virtual Academy, Missouri Connections Academy) are tuition-free, state-funded, serve Missouri residents only, and follow state curriculum standards. Enrollment requires proof of Missouri residency and runs on fixed school-year calendars.
Private online high schools in Missouri charge tuition but operate outside the public school system – no state residency requirement, no MOCAP enrollment process, no host district diploma.
Private schools serving Missouri families include:
Mizzou Academy – the precollegiate program of the University of Missouri, diploma-granting since 1999. Offers 200+ courses K–12, serves students globally. Graduates earn a University of Missouri High School diploma recognized by US institutions.
The Keystone School (MSA-CESS accredited, self-paced model) – established in 1974, serves grades K–12 with rolling enrollment. Self-paced only, no live instruction.
USCI (US Career Institute) – accredited by DEAC and MSA-CESS, 40+ years in operation. Serves adult learners and traditional high schoolers. The program includes self-paced plan (one or two courses at a time). Graduates take career pathways in business, healthcare, IT, paralegal, and veterinary studies. 4.8/5 TrustScore, 97% of students would recommend.
Citizens High School (non-regionally accredited, self-paced only) – established in 1999, focuses on adult learners and non-traditional students. Self-paced coursework, flexible completion timeline.
Laurel Springs School (WASC-accredited, mix of live and self-paced but semester-locked) – serves grades K–12 with both live sessions and self-paced options, but enrollment locks into semester blocks.
George Washington University Online High School (selective admissions, college-prep focus) – highly selective program affiliated with GWU, focuses on college preparation but doesn’t offer one-on-one instruction.
Private programs vary significantly in accreditation body, diploma recognition, AP access, and class structure. The table below compares the key factors against Legacy.
| Missouri Private Online Institutions | Legacy Online School | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $4,000–$10,000/year avg | Starts at $2,500/year |
| Accreditation | WASC, MSA-CESS, Cognia, or none | WASC (regional) |
| Curriculum | Varies by school | FLVS-based, US-accredited |
| Eligibility | Open enrollment | Open globally |
| Schedule | Self-paced or semester blocks | Self-paced + live group + 1-on-1 |
| AP courses | 5–12 courses typical | 19 AP courses |
| Class size | Self-paced only or 15–20 | Max 15 learners, 1:15 ratio |
| Dual enrollment | Not standard | Arizona State University (ASU) University of South Florida (USF) |
| Live instruction | Limited or none (Laurel: yes) | Daily, Monday–Friday (Group plan) |
Keystone and Citizens run self-paced only – no live teaching. Laurel Springs offers live sessions but locks into semester blocks. GWU Online is selective and college-prep focused but doesn’t offer one-on-one instruction. Mizzou Academy has strong US recognition but regional scope is limited compared to WASC. We run three plans – self-paced, live group (15-learner cap), one-on-one – and families switch between them without re-enrolling.
We are a WASC-accredited private K–12 online school – not a Missouri public school, not tuition-free, and not tied to local school district requirements. Families in Missouri enroll independently.
In practice, this means that Legacy’s diploma is accepted for university admissions, employment, and military enlistment globally. Recent graduates enrolled at Hillsborough College, Penn State (Forensic Science), Florida Gulf Coast University (Computer Science), University of New Haven (Cybersecurity ($30,000 merit scholarship)), University of North Carolina Wilmington, University of Portsmouth (Cyber Security and Forensic Computing), University of Essex (Law with Criminology), University of Maryland (Letters and Sciences), Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Homeland Security ($5,000 scholarship)), and University of Delaware.
The school offers 19 AP courses through direct College Board Level I affiliation (school code: 000114) – more than most Missouri online high schools or brick-and-mortar schools can offer. For children preparing for college and building a competitive application, that depth matters.
Our curriculum covers core subjects – English, math, science, social studies – plus electives, honors courses, and the full AP catalog. Built on Florida Virtual School (FLVS) curriculum.
Three learning plans serve different students:
Live Group – structured daily classes, max 15 per class. Our qualified teachers know every student. Missed a class? Recordings are available. This plan suits those who need academic structure without a traditional brick-and-mortar school.
One-on-One – totally personalized curriculum and schedule built around your child. For enrollees significantly ahead of their age group, athletes with non-standard hours, or children with specific learning needs.
Self-paced – no fixed schedule, no academic year calendar. A student in Missouri can learn at their own pace, accelerate through mastered content, and take more time where needed. This is the plan for families who need maximum flexibility – not just flexible location, but a genuinely flexible curriculum.
Three graduation tracks: Standard (24 credits), Honors (24 credits), Accelerated (18 credits). All lead to the same WASC-accredited diploma. Legacy is College Board Level I approved – AP courses and exams administered directly, no separate exam center needed.
Dual enrollment through Arizona State University is available for eligible high schoolers. That’s real college credit before graduation – a differentiator no Missouri online public school currently offers.
No enrollment window. Missouri students can start any time. No waitlist – accounts ready within 48 hours. Pricing starts from $2,500/year full-time; self-paced elementary from $149/month.
Whether you’re a parent looking for an alternative to the local school district or a student who needs a diploma program that travels – enroll today and start within the week.
