How Admission Works for UAE Private Schools
Walk into most Dubai or Abu Dhabi private institutions mid-year and the first thing an admission officer asks for is a transfer certificate. Not a report card. A transfer certificate, on the previous school’s letterhead, with the child’s name, grade, and last date of attendance stamped by the principal.
For a child entering Grade 1 or younger – KG1, KG2 – none of this applies. Placement runs on age. From Grade 2 onward, the certificate has to be attested. That chain usually runs through four stops. The previous school’s Ministry of Education first. Then the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Then the UAE embassy or consulate abroad. Finally, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs once the family lands. Indian nationals in Dubai often add a fifth – the Indian Consulate. Some documents need translation. Most expire within 30 days of issue. It’s not a quick process, and families relocating in July regularly find it running past the start of the academic year.
Dubai schools answer to KHDA. Abu Dhabi answers to ADEK. Sharjah has its own authority, SPEA. Each wants the birth certificate and Emirates ID alongside the transfer certificate.
