What International Schools in France Actually Charge
Let’s start with the numbers. International school tuition in France is not one figure – it depends entirely on which school, which city, and which program.
The International School of Paris (ISP), one of the most established in the country, charges tuition in the range of €18,000 to €22,000+ per academic year for secondary students. The age range covered runs 3 to 18. Registration fees are separate. The ISP follows the IB curriculum, which means families also budget for IB examination fees in the final two years – several hundred euros per subject.
Outside Paris: international schools in Lyon, Lille, Nantes, and Bordeaux are typically €10,000 to €16,000 per year. Still significant. Most require enrollment well in advance.
The bac (French Baccalaureate) at a French lycée is free. But it’s in French, and it follows the French national curriculum entirely. For expat families who plan to apply to American universities, the bac doesn’t generate AP scores or the kind of transcript that American universities often expect.
French Public Universities: Low but Not Zero

French public higher education institutions (universités, grandes écoles like Centrale, Polytechnique, AgroParisTech, ENSTA) set tuition fees on a national scale. For the 2025-2026 academic year, standard tuition at a licence (bachelor’s) level was around €170 per year for EU students. Master’s programs: around €243 per year.
Non-EU students, however, pay differentiated tuition fees. The French government introduced differentiated rates: non-EU bachelor’s students pay around €2,770 per year, master’s students around €3,770 per year. Still low compared to UK or US tuition, but not zero.
There are exemption categories. Students with refugee status or subsidiary protection qualify for the lower EU rate. Erasmus students and some bilateral agreements also affect what’s payable. Scholarship and financial aid options exist through Campus France and institutional programs.
Grandes écoles – particularly the selective ones – follow their own fee structures and selection through classes préparatoires (intensive post-bac preparation). Université de Lyon, for example, charges standard national rates.
