Peter Crawford Valentino: The Visionary Behind Legacy Online School K-12 in Illinois

Embrace the world of Peter Crawford Valentino, the visionary behind Legacy Online School, and be inspired by a legacy that intertwines art, passion, and education.
In the bustling heart of Illinois, drawing from a rich lineage of five generations of educators and propelled by his extensive experience in teaching, Peter Crawford Valentino made a monumental decision: to found the K12 Legacy Online School. A beacon of education, this institution stands as a testament to Peter's commitment to knowledge and his belief in the transformative power of learning.
Peter is a man of many talents — an accomplished actor, writer, director, producer, musician, and, notably, a teacher. His vast and varied journey, which spans from the vibrant streets of LA to the iconic skyline of New York and the glittering lights of Las Vegas, is a story of creative search, passion, dedication, and unyielding commitment to the arts.

From his early days as a lead singer and guitarist, captivating audiences in local LA venues, to his concert tour for the U.S. military that took him across the Middle East and Europe, Peter's musical journey was a sight to behold, earning him a special feature on MTV. His love for melodies seamlessly integrates into his films, creating soundtracks that are both enchanting and unforgettable.

The allure of theater was another calling Peter could not resist. Diverse roles in stage plays, live improv comedy, television, and film only deepened his love for the performing arts. This love took him to New York City, where he honed his skills as an improv actor, and later to Las Vegas, where he established the Neon Venus Art Theatre, and subsequently its sister theater in the Hollywood district.

Noteworthy films and projects like "Bobby and Tiffany", "Davidson and Bradley", "Dead Dreamers", "Detective Charles Hanover", "The Falcon", "Ivan's Angels", and "Golden Blood", to name a few, grace his portfolio. Explore his detailed journey and list of achievements on IMDb, and for those looking to connect on a professional front, his LinkedIn profile awaits.

Illinois high schoolers have one primary public virtual option. One. That’s not a criticism – it’s the structure the Illinois State Board of Education set up. Since 2022, IVSA (Illinois Virtual Schools & Academy) has been the only approved public provider in the ISBE (Illinois State Board of Education) Virtual Course Catalog, administered by the Lake County Regional Office of Education (CEEB Code: 140188). For families looking at Illinois online high schools, that’s the starting point.

But it’s not the only option.

IVSA: Illinois’ Only Approved Public Provider

IVSA has been running online education in Illinois since 2001 – previously administered by ISBE, the Illinois Mathematics & Science Academy, and Peoria Regional Office of Education before landing with Lake County ROE 34.

What it offers today:

Full-Time Academy – grades 5–12, full course of study aligned to state and national standards. Active online learning environment, not just self-paced modules. Daily learning with real-time support, live instruction, and applied learning options. Each student gets a Student Success Coach and a Guidance Counselor.

Supplemental online courses – over 200 options for high schoolers including AP courses, core curriculum, electives, world languages, and credit recovery. Delivered through the Virtual Course Catalog. Illinois schools that enroll children through the catalog can apply for the Board reimbursement.

Summer school – core courses, world languages, and career and technical courses for high schoolers.

Tutoring – available to students in grades 6–12 through a partnership with Varsity Tutors, online and synchronous.

In March 2025, IVSA launched a partnership with the University of Illinois System to expand virtual education statewide – building on a successful Lake County pilot.

IVSA works well for motivated students in Illinois schools looking to complete a course or supplement their brick-and-mortar experience. For families who want full-time virtual education outside the public system – or who live outside Illinois – the options narrow quickly.

Private Online Schools Serving Illinois Families

Private online schools operate independently from ISBE and don’t require Illinois residency. Schools serving Illinois families include The Keystone School (MSA-CESS accredited, self-paced model), Citizens High School (non-regionally accredited, self-paced only), Laurel Springs School (WASC-accredited, mix of live and self-paced but semester-locked), and George Washington University Online High School (selective admissions, college-prep focus).

Keystone and Citizens run self-paced only – no live teaching. Laurel Springs offers live sessions but locks into semester blocks. GWU Online is selective and doesn’t offer one-on-one instruction.

How We Compare to Other Private Online Schools in Illinois

IVSA is tied to Illinois. Enrollment goes through local school districts. Out-of-state families, recently relocated families, or those who’ve been homeschooling don’t always fit the public framework.

That’s where an accredited online private school fills the gap.

Legacy Online School: College and Career Preparation

High school is where the transcript starts to matter. What’s on it – and what isn’t – shapes where a student can apply.

Our high school program runs grades 9–12 on a US-accredited FLVS curriculum. Through our College Board affiliation (school code: 000114), children have access to 19 Advanced Placement courses. Strong AP scores mean college credits before graduation – real leverage when applying to the University of Illinois, Northwestern, DePaul, Loyola Chicago, or schools beyond Illinois.

Three graduation tracks available:

All three tracks lead to a fully accredited high school diploma from a WASC-approved private institution – recognized by colleges, employers, and military institutions. Credits are transferable to other accredited institutions. Dual enrollment through Arizona State University and the University of South Florida lets high schoolers start earning college credits before graduation – courses that count toward both the diploma and a future degree. These are the only two universities we partner with for dual enrollment, which means credits are vetted and transferable within their systems.

Online high school diploma isn’t a shortcut. It’s the same credential, earned differently.

Three Learning Plans

Live Group Learning – live online classes, max 15 learners, 1:15 teacher ratio. Daily learning structure, real teacher interaction, no commute.

Self-Paced Learning – no fixed school year, no synchronized schedule. Teachers grade work, answer questions, and give feedback. The timeline belongs to your child.

Virtual clubs and extracurriculars are included in every plan.

What are Illinois virtual schools and how do they differ from traditional brick-and-mortar schools?
They deliver a full K-12 curriculum online, letting your children earn an accredited high school diploma without in-person attendance. Traditional schools require students to show up at a fixed location on a schedule. Virtual schools allow learners to complete coursework from home, with teacher assistance. The instruction model varies – public virtual schools follow state calendars and residency rules, while private online schools offer year-round enrollment and no residency requirement.
Are diplomas from private online schools recognized by Illinois colleges?
Regional accreditation matters more than the school's location. WASC-accredited diplomas are recognized by the University of Illinois, Northwestern, DePaul, Loyola Chicago, and other Illinois institutions the same way campus-based credentials are. What admissions offices review: course rigor, GPA, AP scores, and whether credits come from an accredited institution.
What is the enrollment process for online private schools in Illinois?
Start with accreditation. If a school isn't properly accredited, the diploma may not be worth the paper it's printed on – so verify that first, before looking at anything else.
From there: review the course catalog, check tuition, and submit an application. You'll need previous academic records or transcripts. Some schools require a placement assessment; most ask you to choose a payment plan at sign-up.
One practical difference from public virtual schools – private online schools aren't tied to district boundaries.
How does virtual education support K-12 students with different learning needs?
Virtual K-12 schools in Illinois offer flexible pacing and varied instruction formats. Self-paced programs let advanced learners move faster while giving others more time on difficult material. Live instruction options – where available – provide direct teacher contact for students who learn better with real-time interaction.
Student athletes, performers, and those with health conditions benefit from scheduling flexibility and plan requirements that traditional schools can't easily offer. The practical result is that virtual learning is not only for homeschooling families or children with unusual circumstances.
Do private online schools offer summer enrollment?
Yes. Private online schools don't follow a traditional school calendar, so enrollment is open year-round – including summer. Families use summer to recover credits, get ahead, or start courses their local school doesn't offer. No fixed start date, no waiting for September.
What high school courses are available in a typical virtual course catalog?
Core requirements are covered at every accredited Illinois virtual institution: English Language Arts, Math (Algebra through Pre-Calculus), Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Social Studies (US History, World History, Government).
As for other courses, it varies. Foreign languages, arts, technology electives, career and technical education pathways – most schools offer some combination. AP and honors courses appear in most catalogs, though the number differs significantly school to school. Worth checking the actual course list, not just the headline count.
Are private online schools only for homeschoolers?
No. Homeschoolers make up part of the student body – private online schools offer them structure and an accredited diploma pathway. But the rest of the population is just as varied: students who left traditional schools, kids with chronic health conditions, competitive athletes, rural students whose nearest school doesn't offer AP courses. Part-time enrollment exists too. A student at a traditional Illinois school can take one or two courses without switching schools entirely.
How do private online schools in Illinois compare to each other?
Keystone offers rolling enrollment but mostly self-paced work. Citizens High School runs self-paced only, no live teaching. Laurel Springs has live sessions but locks you into semester blocks. GWU Online is selective and college-prep focused. We run three plans – self-paced, live group (15-learner cap), one-on-one – and you switch between them without re-enrolling.
Do private online schools in Illinois offer part-time enrollment?
Yes. Part-time plans let families supplement a traditional school with specific courses – AP classes their local school doesn't offer, core subjects on a flexible schedule, or individual courses for credit recovery. Enrollment is rolling, no fixed start date. Students can switch between part-time and full-time without re-enrolling.
Can Illinois families get financial assistance for private online schools?
Illinois doesn't have a universal voucher program like Arizona or Indiana. The Invest in Kids scholarship program expired in 2023. Private school tuition is out-of-pocket for most families. Some private online schools offer payment plans (annual, semester, monthly) with discounts for upfront payment.
What's the difference between IVSA and a private online school?
IVSA is public, tuition-free, Illinois-only, and follows ISBE standards. Enrollment goes through your local school district. Private online schools charge tuition, have no residency requirement, and operate under regional accreditation (WASC, MSA-CESS). Private schools offer more scheduling flexibility – self-paced, live group, and one-on-one options – while IVSA follows a structured calendar.
