Utah’s online education landscape offers structure. The Statewide Online Education Program (SOEP) gives public and private school students a way to take online courses without leaving their enrolled school. Full-time online public schools serve students who want something different. For families who need a diploma that works beyond Utah’s borders, accredited private options exist.
Mountain Heights Academy is an AdvancED-accredited tuition-free online charter school open to Utah students in grades 7-12. It offers credit recovery, concurrent enrollment through Utah Tech University for grades 9-12, and career technical education at Applied Technology Colleges across the state.
Williamsburg Academy Private School is an online private school, which offers specialized, Socratic-method education for grades 6-12.
Utah Online School (UOS) is a free K-12 public school run by Washington County School District. Designed for flexibility – full-time, part-time, and summer options available. Open to Utah students statewide.
Utah Virtual Academy (UTVA) is a full-time K-12 online public school. Tuition-free, open to all students in grades K–12 living anywhere in Utah.
Mountain Heights serves grades 7–12 only. No elementary option. SOEP caps course access at 6.0 credits per year, limiting students who want to accelerate. Neither school offers a diploma recognized by universities outside the US without additional credential evaluation.
For Utah families in transition – international moves, athletic schedules that don’t align with a school year, or a need for a credential that travels – these options have limits.
Legacy Online School is a WASC-accredited private online K-12 school serving students anywhere in Utah or anywhere in the world. Not a public school. Not SOEP-affiliated. Not tied to any district. Children living anywhere in the state of Utah enroll directly as students of an accredited international private school.
WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) is the same accreditation standard held by established US private schools. The Legacy diploma is accepted for university admissions, employment, and military enlistment globally – including by US universities.
Legacy offers 19 AP courses through College Board Level I approval (school code: 000114). Concurrent enrollment through Arizona State University is available for eligible high schoolers. The curriculum is built on Florida Virtual School content. Qualified teachers deliver live instruction.
Full list of verified university acceptances for Legacy graduates is available on our website.
Utah private school tuition averages $13,334 for elementary and $17,046 for high school. The school operates differently.
Cost comparison: Legacy’s self-paced elementary starts at $149/month ($1,788/year) – 87% less than Utah’s average private school tuition. Full-time plans vary by grade level and learning structure. Check current pricing here.
Location independence: Traditional private schools require daily commute to a physical campus. Legacy delivers instruction online. Your child attends from home, from another state, or from another country. No relocation required when your family moves.
Accreditation standard: WASC accredits Legacy using the same criteria applied to established US private schools. Utah employers and universities recognize WASC credentials.
Curriculum depth: 19 AP courses, concurrent enrollment through Arizona State University, and curriculum built on Florida Virtual School content. Not all Utah private schools offer this range – particularly for families who need advanced coursework without switching schools.
Learning structure: Three distinct plans. Live Group classes with max 10 students. One-on-One personalized instruction. Self-Paced independent learning. Traditional private schools typically offer one fixed schedule and one teaching model.
Live Group runs structured daily classes. 10 students per class max. A qualified teacher knows your child’s name and notices when something’s off. Real-time instruction, real-time interaction.
One-on-One delivers a personalized curriculum and schedule for a single learner. No waiting for the class to catch up.
Self-Paced removes the schedule and virtual classroom entirely. No academic year. No fixed class times. Your child moves through coursework at their own pace. Still accredited. Still a diploma.
For Utah’s student athletes, families who move between states, or learners who thrive outside an in-person environment, these three plans provide flexibility that traditional brick-and-mortar alternatives can’t match.
Legacy’s high school program emphasizes college and career readiness with 19 AP courses, which cover subjects from AP Calculus BC to AP English Literature to AP Computer Science A. Every AP course is College Board-approved under school code 000114.
Concurrent enrollment through Arizona State University lets eligible students earn college credits while finishing high school. Credits transfer to other institutions.
Standard diploma requires 24 credits. Accelerated diploma path offers 18 credits for faster graduation or career pathway entry. At least 25% of coursework must be completed at Legacy for diploma eligibility.
Utah graduates from Legacy have been accepted to universities including University of Utah, Utah State University, Brigham Young University, Westminster College, and Southern Utah University. The WASC accreditation is recognized by admissions offices across the state and beyond.
48 hours and you are in. No fixed windows. No need to wait until the school year starts.
Trial option: one free class for your child, one parent meeting. No obligation.
Placement tests available for grades K-8 to match your child to the right level.
No Utah residency requirement. Legacy serves students across the US and in 15+ countries.
