Key takeaways
Getting into an Irish university and getting into an American university require completely different approaches. The CAO system in Ireland is mechanistic – points in, offers out. The US system is holistic, subjective, and heavily influenced by what's on the transcript beyond grades. Students in Ireland who are targeting both systems simultaneously need to understand both – and plan early enough to build the right application for each.
- Irish university admission for undergraduate programs runs through the Central Applications Office (CAO) – a points-based system tied directly to Leaving Certificate results.
- US universities evaluate applications holistically: GPA, AP scores, extracurriculars, personal statement, and letters of recommendation all factor in.
- Entry requirements vary significantly by program – medicine, veterinary medicine, and agricultural science have additional requirements beyond standard CAO points.
- Learners with a WASC-accredited US diploma can apply directly to American universities; some Irish institutions also consider international qualifications on a case-by-case basis.

The CAO: How Irish University Admission Works
The Central Applications Office (CAO) is Ireland’s centralized application system for undergraduate programs at universities, institutes of technology, and other third-level institutions. Every Irish student applying to an undergraduate degree program – whether at University College Dublin (UCD), Trinity College Dublin, University of Galway, University College Cork, or Dublin City University – applies through the CAO.
The process is standardized. Learners submit their course preferences by 1 February for the standard deadline, with late applications accepted until 1 May at a higher fee. The CAO publishes points requirements based on demand each year – not fixed thresholds. A course that required 520 points in 2025 might require 505 or 535 in 2026 depending on how many applicants achieved those scores.
Points are calculated from the Leaving Certificate results. Six subjects count – the best six, including mandatory Irish (unless exempt) and typically English. Higher level grades earn more points than ordinary level. Higher level mathematics earns an additional 25 bonus points. The student with the highest points total who listed a program as their first preference gets an offer first. That’s it. No personal statement. No interview. No extracurriculars. Points in, offer out.
“You apply for almost all full-time third-level education undergraduate courses through the Central Applications Office (CAO).”

Entry Requirements by Program Type
Standard entry requirements for most undergraduate programs at Irish universities in 2026 require a minimum of six subjects in the Leaving Certificate, including specific subject requirements per faculty.
Medicine and health professions. Undergraduate medicine at Irish higher education institutions requires the HPAT-Ireland (Health Professions Admission Test) in addition to meeting the academic entry requirements. The HPAT is a separate aptitude test – not subject knowledge. Graduate entry medicine programs at UCD and other institutions require an undergraduate degree with a minimum GPA of around 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, plus the GAMSAT.
Veterinary medicine. Specific science subject requirements apply. Chemistry is typically mandatory. Points requirements for the program are among the highest across Irish universities – consistently above 570 in recent years.
Agricultural science. University College Dublin’s agricultural science program has specific science subject requirements. Mathematics for engineering programs similarly specifies higher level mathematics in most cases.
Language requirements for international students. Non-EU pupils applying to Irish higher education institutions in 2026 typically need to demonstrate English proficiency through IELTS (minimum 6.0 for most undergraduate programs) or equivalent. EU pupils whose secondary education was in English are generally exempt.
Postgraduate Admission in Ireland
Postgraduate programs in Ireland – masters degrees, graduate diplomas, research degrees – do not go through the CAO. Learners apply directly to their chosen institution. Each admissions office sets its own entry requirements.
For postgraduate study at universities in Ireland, a 2.1 honors undergraduate degree is the standard minimum for taught masters programs. Some programs accept a 2.2 with relevant work experience on a case-by-case basis. Research programs require a research proposal and supervisor agreement before admission.
International applicants for graduate study should contact the admissions office of their target institution directly. Tuition fees for non-EU students at postgraduate level vary significantly by program and institution – and are considerably higher than the EU/domestic rate.
Applying to US Universities from Ireland
The US university admissions process operates on a completely different logic. There is no central applications office equivalent to the CAO. Each university receives applications directly – through the Common App, Coalition App, or its own system.
For a student in Ireland applying to US universities in 2026, the key components of an undergraduate application are: GPA, AP exam scores, extracurricular activities, personal statement, letters of recommendation, and standardized test scores (SAT/ACT – optional at many universities but still considered).
AP scores carry particular weight. US admissions offices treat AP scores of 4 or 5 as direct evidence of college-level capability. A student from Ireland with strong Leaving Certificate results and three or four AP scores of 4+ presents a genuinely competitive application to selective American programs.
The application timeline for US universities differs from CAO. Early Decision and Early Action deadlines typically fall in November. Regular Decision deadlines are January to February. Offers come in March–April. This overlaps with the CAO process – families targeting both systems simultaneously need careful calendar management.

Studying Abroad and International Qualifications
Some Irish learners pursue a year of study abroad – in the United States, Canada, Australia, or elsewhere – as part of their undergraduate program. Irish universities with strong international partnerships facilitate this through Erasmus+ for European destinations and bilateral agreements for others.
For non-EU students already in Ireland who hold international qualifications, Irish higher education institutions assess eligibility on a case-by-case basis. A US high school diploma from a WASC-accredited institution is an international qualification – Ireland’s universities set their own requirements for how such credentials are evaluated. Direct contact with the admissions office of the target institution is essential.
“Applicants presenting qualifications gained outside the EU are assessed for admission purposes on an individual basis.”

Scholarships for Irish and International Students
Universities in Ireland offer merit-based and need-based scholarships for both domestic and international students. UCD, Trinity College Dublin, and University of Galway each have dedicated scholarship programs for high-achieving entrants.
For learners applying to US universities from Ireland, scholarship availability is broader. Legacy graduates have received merit scholarships at US institutions – including a $30,000 merit scholarship at the University of New Haven and a $5,000 scholarship at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. These are institution-specific awards, not guaranteed outcomes. But a strong AP record and WASC-accredited transcript position students well for merit consideration.
Legacy’s college guidance program includes scholarship identification and application support alongside university shortlisting.
The Dual Pathway: Both Systems at Once
Some students in Ireland – particularly expat families, returning Irish families, or international families altogether – want to keep both the Irish university option and the US university option open simultaneously. That means:
Sitting the Leaving Certificate for CAO points. Taking AP courses through Legacy for US admissions and potential college credit. Building extracurriculars through Legacy’s virtual clubs and other activities. Applying to both CAO and US universities on overlapping timelines.
All of the above is demanding. The Kavanagh family in Dublin managed it – their daughter completed her Leaving Certificate, sat three AP exams through Legacy, and applied to both Irish and US universities in the same cycle. She received a CAO offer from UCD and an acceptance from a US university with AP credits already applied. She chose the US option. The point is: she had the choice.
Legacy’s dual enrollment pathway through Arizona State University (ASU) and University of South Florida (USF) adds a further option – actual university credits earned while still completing the high school program.

Top Tips from Our Expert
Maya Robinson, College Prep Advisor at Legacy Online School
- The CAO change of mind deadline in July allows Irish learners to reorder their course preferences after receiving Leaving Certificate results. If you’re also holding a US university offer at that point, you need to have made your decision before the CAO deadline – the timelines don’t align neatly.
- AP subject selection matters for US admissions. Choose subjects that align with your intended major. Applying to engineering programs? AP Calculus and AP Physics. Humanities? AP English Literature and AP History. Admissions offices notice the coherence – or the lack of it.
- Student life at US universities is very different from Irish universities – the residential campus model, extracurricular culture, and academic structure are all distinct. Legacy’s college guidance program includes university visits and information sessions that help students make an informed choice, not just a high-points choice.
- The personal statement for US university applications is the part most Irish pupils underestimate. It’s not a summary of achievements – it’s a piece of writing that reveals something about who you are. Start drafting it in fifth year, not sixth.
