The most common disability group among students from prekindergarten through 12th grade is “specific learning disabilities“, like dyslexia, according to Pew Research Center. Many schools work to support students with special needs by offering help.
Special needs students are persons who require additional support due to various problems. These problems include mental issues, developmental disabilities, and others. Schools use different options to provide additional help for students with special needs. We will look at the different types of special needs and how Legacy Online School helps students with them.
5 Special Needs Requiring Greater Support in Education
We will explore five special needs. Students with these special needs require more support to learn effectively.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder making it difficult to stay focused, control emotions and actions. Students with ADHD find it hard to focus for long periods, listen closely to the teacher, and complete tasks requiring attention. More information about ADHD is provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a learning disability characterized by difficulties with accurate word using and recognition. Students with dyslexia struggle to understand what others are saying, have difficulty clearly expressing their thoughts, and are frequently misunderstood by others. More information about dyslexia is provided by the International Dyslexia Association.
Hearing Impairments
Hearing impairments are partial or complete loss of the ability to hear. Hearing impairments range in severity and affect one or both ears. These impairments occur due to issues in the outer, middle, or inner ear, or within the auditory nerve. Students with hearing impairments struggle to fully understand what the teacher or classmates are saying. These students learn sign language to improve communication, but many others do not know or use sign language. This creates additional barriers to understanding and participation of these students in class. More information about hearing impairments is provided by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD).
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
ASD is a developmental disorder affecting communication, behavior, and social interaction. Students with ASD perceive many things differently and find it harder to fit into typical social frameworks and make friends. More information about ASD is provided by Autism Speaks.
Physical Disabilities
Physical disabilities are conditions affecting a student’s physical abilities. This is a broad range of issues, with a more specific example being spinal cord injuries. This issue prevents students from walking. Students with physical disabilities find it challenging to participate in hands-on activities and experiments due to their limitations. More information about physical disabilities is provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
