Key takeaways
The AP program – Advanced Placement – is how American high school students demonstrate college-level ability before they graduate. A score of 3 or higher on an AP exam typically earns college credit at US universities. For students in Italy, AP courses are accessible, available online, and genuinely useful – whether the goal is a US university, a UK institution, or simply a transcript that stands out. This article explains how the AP program works, what courses are available to students studying from Italy, and how AP fits into the broader US college admissions process.
- AP courses are college-level classes taken during high school; strong AP exam scores can earn college credit at hundreds of US colleges and universities.
- Legacy offers 19 AP courses, delivered live online – available to high school students in Italy regardless of location.
- AP and IB are both recognized by US admissions offices, but they are different qualifications with different structures.
- Students who are home-schooled or enrolled in a school that does not offer AP can still take AP exams through independent enrollment with College Board.

What Is the AP Program?
Advanced Placement is a program run by the College Board that allows high school students to take college-level courses and sit standardized AP exams in May each year. Scores run from 1 to 5. A score of 3 or higher is the standard threshold for college credit at most US colleges and universities – though some institutions require a 4 or 5 for credit in specific subjects.
The benefits of the AP program are concrete. College credit earned before enrollment means fewer courses to pay for in college. It can also allow a student to skip introductory courses and enter more advanced coursework from the first semester. At competitive universities, a strong AP transcript signals demonstrated ability in college-level work – not just potential.
Legacy is a College Board-affiliated school (code 000114). AP courses at Legacy’s online high school are college-level by design, taught in live online classes, with a curriculum delivered through FlexPoint Education Cloud.

AP Courses Available at Legacy
Legacy offers 19 AP courses across subject areas. Among them: AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Computer Science, AP English Language and Composition, AP World History, AP Government and Politics, and AP Italian Language and Culture. The full list is on our AP courses page.
Each course is taught entirely in English. Live classes. Capped at 15 students. A qualified teacher runs every session – not a recorded video, not asynchronous modules. The AP curriculum is identical whether the student sits in Rome, Florence, or anywhere else across Italy.
“AP credits are accepted by over 500 universities in over 75 countries, including the U.K., Canada and Australia. Many also accept AP scores for admissions, placement, and scholarship decisions.”

AP Italian Language and Culture for Students in Italy
This one deserves its own paragraph. AP Italian Language and Culture is a rigorous exam testing reading, writing, listening, and speaking in Italian. A student who has spent years living in Italy – attending local schools, speaking the language daily, navigating real Italian contexts – has a genuine advantage on this exam. The target language isn’t abstract – it’s the one they use to order coffee and argue with their siblings.
A 4 or 5 on AP Italian Language and Culture, alongside strong scores in academic subjects, is a compelling part of a US university application. It demonstrates language proficiency and real-world cultural immersion in a way that a classroom grade cannot.
How US College Admissions Work for Students in Italy
US college admissions evaluate applicants on multiple dimensions: GPA, AP scores, essays, recommendations, extracurricular activities. For students who are still in high school and studying from Italy, the process is the same as for any US high school student – the location doesn’t change the application requirements.
A WASC–accredited transcript from Legacy carries the same weight as a transcript from an American private school. College Board-verified AP scores are submitted directly to universities. Our college guidance programs support students through every stage of the admissions process.
“The Advanced Placement Program offers high school students an opportunity to pursue college-level coursework in a range of disciplines… most colleges offer credit or placement or both to students earning qualifying scores of 3 or higher.”

A Legacy high school diploma doesn’t guarantee admission to any specific institution. What it does provide: a verified WASC-accredited transcript, College Board AP scores, and the academic preparation that makes an applicant competitive.
AP and IB – What US Admissions Offices See
Both AP and IB are recognized by US colleges and universities. The difference is structural. The IB diploma programme is a two-year commitment with a fixed set of requirements. AP courses are modular – a student can take one or ten, in any combination of subjects. For US admissions, AP scores in specific subjects often give more direct signals than the IB: a 5 in AP Calculus tells a STEM program exactly where the student stands.
That said, both pathways demonstrate rigor. Students who’ve completed the IB and want to add AP scores before applying to US universities can do so – Legacy accepts enrollment from students in international schools that do not offer AP.
What About Students Not at a US School?
Home-schooled students and students attending schools that do not offer AP can still take the AP exam through independent AP testing arrangements with College Board. The AP curriculum itself can be studied at Legacy. The exam is sat at a College Board-registered test center. Italy has AP exam centers in major cities – families should verify current locations and registration deadlines directly with College Board.
Legacy’s live courses prepare students for the AP exam. That preparation – not the physical location of the exam – is what Legacy provides.
Luca Ricci, 17, from Naples, attended a local Italian liceo scientifico but wanted AP courses his school didn’t offer. He enrolled at Legacy part-time for AP Calculus and AP Computer Science. His Italian school schedule and Legacy’s live online classes ran in parallel – no conflict, different curriculum tracks. He sat both AP exams in May and scored 4 on each. Both scores were accepted by the US university he enrolled in the following fall, awarding him 8 college credits before his first day.
And here’s a different path entirely. Sofia Marchetti, 16, from Milan, had been following the IB curriculum at a local international school. Her family relocated mid-year; the new school didn’t offer the IB continuation she needed. Rather than lose the year, her parents enrolled her at Legacy’s online high school for AP courses in English Language and Composition and AP World History – subjects that mapped directly onto her IB work. She sat both AP exams that May. One US university she applied to the following year awarded her placement credit for both. The IB year wasn’t wasted. It became an AP year instead.

Top Tips from Our Expert
Maya Robinson, College Prep Advisor at Legacy Online School
- AP registration for May exams opens in the fall – confirm deadlines with your Legacy teacher in September. Missing the registration window means waiting a full year.
- Choose APs that align with your intended college major. Admissions officers notice when a STEM applicant’s AP transcript is heavy on humanities, and vice versa.
- A strong AP score in Italian Language and Culture is one of the most accessible high scores for students living in Italy. Don’t leave it off the table.
- Use the college guidance program early – ideally in the sophomore year of high school, not the senior year. Application strategy built late is application strategy that runs out of time.
