Key takeaways
Advanced Placement (AP) courses are the clearest signal a student outside the US can send to an American admissions office. French students applying to US universities – and expat children living in France – are not at a disadvantage if they've built a strong AP record. The courses are available online. The exams are the same everywhere.
- AP courses are college-level courses developed by College Board, taken in high school and graded on a 5-point scale
- Strong AP scores (4 or 5) can earn college credit at many US universities, reducing time and cost in higher education
- Students in France can take APs through a College Board-affiliated online school without attending a physical American school
- AP scores from Legacy are accepted by 500+ universities in over 75 countries

What AP Courses Are
Advanced Placement – AP – is a program developed by College Board that allows high school students to take university-level coursework and sit standardized exams. Each exam is graded on a scale of 1 to 5. A score of 3 is considered passing. Scores of 4 or 5 are what competitive US universities want to see.
The workload is real. APs are not accelerated versions of regular high school classes. They are designed to match the rigor of introductory college courses – travail de niveau universitaire, as it’s described in French educational contexts. Students who complete them well arrive at university having already demonstrated they can handle college-level work.
College credit is the practical reward. Many US universities grant crédit universitaire for AP scores of 4 or 5 – meaning a student who arrives with four strong AP scores may be able to skip introductory courses, saving a semester or more of tuition.

AP from France: How It Works
Legacy Online School is WASC-accredited – verified by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges – and holds College Board Level I status. We offer 19 AP courses, including AP Human Geography, AP Psychology, AP US History, AP English Language, AP Calculus, AP Biology, and more.
Classes are live. Teachers are qualified. Groups are capped at 15 pupils. The program runs alongside a French lycée schedule for part-time enrollees, or as a full program for families using Legacy as their primary school.
AP exam registration for students outside the US is handled independently through AP Central. Legacy does not operate a testing center in France – students register for exams at an authorized testing site. Details at AP Central.
“AP gives students the chance to tackle college-level work while they’re still in high school. And through taking AP Exams, students can earn college credit and placement.”
— College Board, AP Program Overview
The Dubois-Kim family in Strasbourg – a Korean-French household – enrolled their son in three APs through Legacy in 11th grade. AP Human Geography, AP Psychology, AP US History. He sat the exams at an authorized center in Germany. All three scored 4 or above. His US university application was competitive from France. He received two offers – both from schools he had been told would be difficult to enter without a US school transcript.

AP vs. the Baccalauréat for US Admissions
This is the practical question for families in France. The baccalauréat général is a respected qualification. US universities know what it is. But it does not carry the same weight in American admissions as AP scores. The bac is a national French exam; AP is an internationally standardized college-level credential.
For a student applying to selective US universities – think top 50, think schools with sub-30% acceptance rates – AP scores are often the differentiator. The bac tells an admissions officer the student completed secondary school in France. AP scores tell them the student can handle college-level work in English.
“AP courses on a student’s transcript show that they’ve challenged themselves with the most rigorous courses available to them. And success on an AP Exam shows that they’re ready for college-level coursework.”
— College Board, AP at a Glance
Some families in France pursue both: bac at the lycée, APs through Legacy. The combination is stronger than either alone for US admissions.
The Petit-Okonkwo family in Marseille took exactly that route. Their daughter was enrolled at a lycée général – bac on track, no plans to leave. But her target universities were in the US. They added two APs through Legacy in 10th grade: AP Human Geography and AP Psychology. Both scored 4. By 12th grade she had four AP scores on her transcript alongside her bac. Three US university offers came back.
What Legacy Offers

Top Tips from Our Expert
Maya Robinson, College Prep Advisor at Legacy Online School
- Start APs in 10th or 11th grade – not 12th. US universities want to see AP scores on the transcript before the final year. A single AP course taken in senior year carries less weight than two or three taken across 10th–12th.
- Choose AP subjects that align with your child’s intended college major. AP Human Geography and AP Psychology are accessible starting points. AP Calculus BC and AP Chemistry signal STEM readiness.
- AP exam registration outside the US requires planning. Find an authorized testing center in France (or a neighboring country) well before the May exam window. Registration deadlines are typically in November.
- A score of 3 passes. A score of 4 or 5 earns college credit at most universities. The difference between a 3 and a 5 on an AP exam is usually preparation depth – not intelligence.
- Legacy’s college guidance team can help build an AP sequence that matches your child’s university goals. This is especially useful for families whose children are simultaneously managing a French lycée program.

College credit policies vary by university. Families should verify current policies directly with their target institutions.
