Middle School Curriculum: Grades 6–8

Our middle school program covers all core subjects on a FLVS-based US-accredited curriculum, with electives that extend beyond the standard core:

Core subjects:

• Language Arts / English – literature, writing, grammar, communication
• Mathematics – Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 preparation, foundational skills for high school math
• Comprehensive Science – life science, physical science, earth science
• Social Studies – world history, geography, civics, economics introduction

Electives available at middle school level:

• Computer Science Discoveries
• Digital Art and Design
• Journalism
• Spanish

Elective selection gives learners the chance to discover genuine interests before high school – when those choices carry more academic weight. Not every program offers this range at the middle school level. Worth checking the actual course catalog before assuming it’s available.

Three Learning Plans

Live Group Learning – live online classes with qualified teachers, maximum 15 learners per class, 1:15 teacher ratio. Daily structure. Real interaction with teachers and classmates. For middle schoolers who need accountability and regular teacher contact.

One-on-One Learning – individual lessons, personalized learning curriculum and schedule. For children with intensive academic needs, significant scheduling constraints, or those who simply don’t perform well in group settings. Every pace decision is built around one child.

Self-Paced Learning – no fixed school year, no synchronized schedule. Teachers grade coursework and give written feedback. Progress moves at the child’s pace. Suitable for families who need genuine scheduling flexibility – not a modified version of a fixed calendar.

Part-time plans available for learners supplementing existing arrangements. Virtual clubs and extracurricular activities included in every enrollment plan.

Additional tutoring is available at $25/hour across all plans.

Preparing Middle School Students for High School

Middle school at Legacy is structured around one practical goal: making sure learners arrive in Grade 9 ready. That means:

Math foundation. The sequence from Grade 6 arithmetic through Grade 8 pre-algebra isn’t decorative – it’s the prerequisite for Algebra 1 and everything that follows. Our middle school courses are designed with the high school math pathway in mind.

Writing and communication. High school courses – and certainly AP courses – demand writing fluency. Middle school is where that fluency gets built. Language Arts coursework at grades 6–8 is designed to develop academic writing, not just basic literacy.

Study independence. High school rewards learners who can manage their own work and ask for help when they need it. Online middle school, particularly in the Self-Paced plan, develops those habits directly – enrollees learn to work without someone managing every hour of their day.

For high-achieving middle schoolers, our program offers the depth to stretch them. For learners who’ve struggled in traditional settings, the 1:15 class ratio and one-on-one option provide the individualized attention that larger classrooms can’t deliver. For families thinking further ahead – dual enrollment through Arizona State University (ASU) and University of South Florida is available at high school level. The only dual enrollment partners we work with.

Accreditation

Legacy Online School is WASC-accredited – the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. College Board Level I approved school, code: 000114. Credits are transferable to other accredited institutions. The academic record your child builds in middle school is part of a continuous K–12 program that leads to a fully accredited high school diploma.

Legacy is an internationally accredited program that coexists with local schooling. Families are responsible for ensuring compliance with any local education requirements applicable to their situation.

The Online Middle School Environment

The small class size in Live Group – maximum 15 children, 1:15 teacher ratio – means middle schoolers aren’t lost in a crowd. Teachers know their pupils academically and can identify when something isn’t clicking before it becomes a problem. That level of individual attention is difficult to sustain in a traditional classroom of 25–30.
