Choosing an online school or part-time educational services feels like walking into a car dealership blindfolded. Everyone says they’re accredited. Everyone promises academic excellence. The brochures look identical. Then you start reading reviews from real families and the picture changes.
We are a US-accredited international online school that coexists with local schooling. Families are responsible for ensuring compliance with any local education requirements applicable to their situation. Here’s what parents and students actually say about online learning – and what to look for when you’re reviewing online schools.
Three questions come up in every conversation with families researching online schools:
Does the credential travel? A diploma from an accredited online school needs to work when your family moves from Doha to Dubai to Toronto. WASC accreditation does that. Regional accreditation from other bodies might not.
Are the classes actually live? Recorded lectures aren’t teaching. Live classes with a qualified teacher and 15 students maximum – that’s a real learning environment. Your child gets called on. The teacher notices when someone’s struggling.
Will my child make friends? Online doesn’t mean isolated. Virtual clubs (chess club included among others), group projects, school events. Kids in Doha connect with classmates in Madrid, Houston, Singapore. The friendships are real.
Parents don’t write detailed reviews in marketing language. They write in relief, frustration, or surprise. Here’s what actually shows up:
“We tried three traditional schools in Doha. The waitlists, the commute, the rigid schedule. Legacy let us keep our sanity.” – Expat family, moved to Qatar mid-year.
“My daughter was drowning in a class of 30. At Legacy, the teacher knows her name. Knows when she’s having a rough week. That’s the difference.” – Parent of middle school student.
“AP courses two years before his school offered them. That opened doors we didn’t expect.” – Parent of high school student applying to US universities.
These aren’t testimonials we asked for. They’re patterns that repeat when you ask families why they chose an online school over a traditional school.
Not all online schools work the same way. Some questions separate strong programs from weak ones:
Is the school accredited? Not “recognized” or “approved.” Accredited. By whom? WASC, Cognia, Middle States – these travel. A vague “internationally recognized” claim doesn’t.
What’s the class size? A “live class” with 100 students isn’t live. It’s a webinar. Look for 10-15 students per group.
Who teaches? Qualified teachers or freelance tutors? There’s a difference. One issues transcripts universities recognize. The other doesn’t.
What happens if my child struggles? One-on-one tutoring? Academic support? Or “email us and we’ll see”?
Can I try before I enroll? A trial class tells you more than ten brochures. One live session shows you the pace, the teacher, the platform.
Most families in Qatar don’t switch to full-time online school on day one. They start part-time:
Full K-12 is available. Many expat families in Qatar use Legacy as their primary educational provider. Requirements vary by visa type and residency status – verify with MOEHE before deciding.
Every parent worries their child won’t adapt. “My son needs structure.” “My daughter gets distracted at home.” Online school reviews mention this constantly.
Two things help. First, Legacy offers both live classes and self-paced courses. Some learners thrive with scheduled live lessons. Some do better working through material at their own tempo. You pick the plan that fits your child’s learning style.
Second, the school day is shorter. Four to six hours of focused work, not eight hours with transit and waiting. Less time. More done.
This shows up in UK online school reviews more than US ones, but it matters everywhere. A child who’s anxious in large groups, who’s been bullied, who struggles socially – how does that work online?
Smaller classes help. Fifteen students per group means no one disappears. Teachers notice. The sense of community builds differently – through virtual clubs, group projects, school events. Not a playground per se, but not isolation either.
Families mention this in reviews: “No more school anxiety.” “She’s herself again.” That’s pastoral care working.
When you’re reading reviews from other families, filter for these signals:

Legacy Online School is an internationally accredited online school (WASC + College Board). Laws on compulsory education and homeschooling vary significantly by country and region. Families are solely responsible for verifying the legal status of online education in their country and region of residence, and for ensuring compliance with applicable compulsory education requirements. Legacy Online School does not provide legal, immigration, or tax advice.
