A six-year-old’s attention span is roughly the length of a TV commercial. A nine-year-old can hold focus for longer, but not the way a textbook chapter assumes. Elementary school works when it respects that — short bursts, lots of variety, an adult close enough to notice when something isn’t clicking.
We are a WASC-accredited international online school that coexists with local schooling. Families are responsible for ensuring compliance with any local education requirements applicable to their situation. For expat families in Qatar, the question is practical: what does an accredited online elementary school look like when it’s built for K-5 instead of imitating a regular classroom on a screen?
Legacy’s virtual elementary school curriculum follows the US K-5 framework. Reading, math, science, social studies, art. Daily lessons through Florida Virtual School (FlexPoint Education Cloud) — the curriculum platform developed by Florida Virtual School and used by accredited schools in the US and internationally.
Core subjects run on a structured online schedule with live classes capped at 15 students per group. Hands-on activities are built into the week, not added as decoration. Kids do experiments at the kitchen table. They draw, build, measure, and bring the results back to class.
A typical day at Legacy’s online elementary school looks something like this. Morning starts with a live online lesson — reading or math, the subjects that need the freshest brain. The qualified teacher works with a small group, asks questions, calls on students by name. Forty minutes, then a break.
Mid-morning, video-based courses or interactive lessons your child can do independently. Hands-on activities follow lunch. Virtual field trips show up once or twice a month. The afternoon is shorter, lighter, often creative.
The whole rhythm respects how your children learn — short, varied, with movement.
Here’s the part that catches new families off guard. In an online elementary school, the parent (or another adult at home) is the learning coach. Not the teacher. Not co-teaching. Just the adult in the room who keeps the schedule on track and helps your six-year-old find the right tab.
For Grade 4-5, kids run their own day with light supervision. For Grade K-2, you’re more involved. By Grade 3 most children are independent for big stretches.
Parents working from home make this work daily. Some families in Doha hire a nanny who speaks English well enough to help during morning classes. Some pair Legacy with a half-day local program so the elementary years stay socially full. There are more ways to staff a learning coach than parents expect.
Two things make the role easier. First, the daily schedule is published a week in advance. Second, the teacher communicates directly with the family on anything the child is struggling with. The learning coach is not flying solo.
The fastest way to lose a seven-year-old is to hand them a PDF and walk away. Legacy’s elementary courses use video-based lessons, interactive elements, and group discussions that actually require your child to talk. Qualified teachers run the live sessions. Self-paced learning fills in the rest of the week with the same curriculum, just at your child’s tempo.
Live Group and Self-Paced are equally valid options at Legacy. Some families use Live Group for math and Self-Paced for reading. Some flip it. The plan adjusts to the child.
One thing that surprises Doha parents — the live class is often more interactive than what their child was getting at a brick-and-mortar school. Fifteen students means the teacher calls on each one multiple times per session. A shy seven-year-old who barely spoke up in a class of thirty starts answering questions by the second week.
A few things matter at this age that don’t get talked about enough.
Small classes. Fifteen learners is small enough that no child disappears.
Pace flexibility. A child who reads two grades above level doesn’t have to wait. A child who needs more time with fractions gets it without falling behind elsewhere.
A consistent learning environment. No moving classrooms. No noisy hallways. For some children this is the difference between thriving and surviving.
Personalized learning paths. Not every child needs the same support in the same subject. The plan adapts.
Virtual learning at this age can feel isolating if it’s set up badly. We work to avoid that. Live online classes mean your child sees their classmates’ faces every day, often connecting kids in Doha with classmates in Madrid, Houston, and Singapore. Virtual clubs run after the school day — chess, drama, science, art. Virtual field trips take the class to a museum in Washington or a coral reef in the Pacific, in the same week.
It’s not the same as a playground. But the friendships are real.
Plenty of families in Qatar don’t switch to Legacy full-time. They keep their child at the Doha school they like and add Legacy for one or two pieces. English language arts for kids who need stronger reading. Math at a level above what their school offers. Summer School to catch up on a subject that didn’t click during the year.
Part-time enrollment is the most common way Qatar families start. No commitment to full K-12 — just one subject, a few months, see how it goes.
Enrolling runs year-round. You don’t have to wait for September. Many families start mid-semester after a move or a change in their main school.
