Maybe the schedule collides with a parent’s shift work. Maybe your child needs more time on one subject than the class allows, or school has become something they dread. Whatever the reason, switching is a decision, not a failure, and plenty of Delaware families make it.
Legacy Online School is an online private school for grades K-12. It is not a Delaware public school program. Classes are live, capped at 15 students, and a student in Wilmington, Newark, or Dover studies on Eastern time, the same clock as Legacy’s base in Florida.
Delaware Law and Online Learning
Delaware requires children from age 5 to 16 to attend school – the state counts a homeschool as a nonpublic school: families register with the Delaware Department of Education in Dover and file enrollment and attendance reports. Legacy is a different thing. It is a private online school that operates from Florida, registered with the Florida Department of Education (School Code 9881) and accredited by WASC. Legacy is not a homeschooling program.
What that means for your paperwork is a question for the Delaware Department of Education. Ask them how enrolling in an out-of-state private online school fits Delaware’s rules and whether you still need to register or report anything. Get the answer before you enroll.
Plans, Schedule and Teachers
Two plans, and the choice comes down to how predictable your week is. Live Group is 15–25 live hours a week, depending on grade level, with classes starting at 9:00 AM. Elementary school meets Monday through Thursday, while middle school and high school meet Monday through Friday. Self-Paced is for families whose week keeps shifting – you set the pace, and a teacher steps in when your child gets stuck.
Both plans use the FLVS curriculum, built by Florida Virtual School and delivered on FlexPoint Education Cloud. Courses cover math, language arts, science, social studies, and electives, all digital. Online High School, Diploma and College
Legacy’s online high school has 19 AP courses approved by the College Board, Honors classes and dual enrollment with Arizona State University and the University of South Florida. The high school diploma comes in three tracks – Standard (24 credits), Accelerated (18) and Honors (24) – and older students get college guidance.
Admission is each college’s decision, so read the requirements at your target schools. Legacy students have been accepted at the University of Delaware, Penn State, and Northeastern, among others.
Tuition and Enrollment
Tuition starts at $149 a month, and the grade and plan move that number. Current figures are on the tuition and fees page. Delaware has no state funding program for private school tuition, so the family pays it. Enrollment is a one-time fee of $299 for the first child and $199 for each sibling. Tutoring is $25 an hour, and AP courses may need digital textbooks at $20–55 per course. A 7-day full tuition refund applies, but the enrollment fee is non-refundable.
