Online education in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) is attractive for lots of students. Some students want to enter STEM but don’t know where to start. We will discuss what students need to use to find their place in STEM.
STEM courses focus on teaching certain disciplines. These disciplines include science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM courses help students develop problem-solving, critical thinking, and technical skills. We’ll look at why STEM education matters and where beginners get started.
Importance of STEM Courses
“Many believe, however, that it combines general attributes that are independent of an individual’s academic and career pursuits with STEM-specific elements. STEM mindset is important for scientists and engineers—it certainly helps them succeed in what they do. Further, it helps young people see STEM-related careers as possibilities. I’d argue, though, that it’s bigger than that. Because of the role science and technology play in our lives, a STEM mindset isn’t reserved only for those with or pursuing STEM-related careers. It is important to everyone—at any age, in any profession, and anywhere in the world”
Beth Murphy, National Science Teaching Association
STEM courses prepare students for careers in high-paying fields. These fields include software development, data science, and engineering. STEM courses make students equipped to deal with global challenges of the market. These challenges include finance problems, climate change and medical issues. We will look at seven resources for students who are just starting in STEM.
Code.org
Code.org is a resource for beginners in STEM. This resource provides coding courses and helps students learn new skills through interactive lessons. STEM beginners start with the Hour of Code section to learn basic programming concepts. They use Computer Science Discoveries to get knowledge of apps and the basic computer science. They use App Lab when they are ready to build their first app.
Scratch
Scratch is a resource about coding for STEM beginners. Students create interactive stories, games, and animations using a coding interface. STEM beginners use Getting Started Guide to learn the basics of Scratch. Students browse Explore Projects to get inspiration for their own project. They use Create when they are ready to build their first project.
Brilliant
Brilliant is a platform for STEM beginners. This platform offers interactive lessons in math, science, and computer science. Brilliant focuses on student’s problem-solving and critical thinking through engaging exercises. STEM beginners start with daily challenges, full courses, and quizzes to get a better understanding about chosen subjects.
edX – Harvard CS50
Harvard’s CS50 is one of the best resources for beginners interested in computer science. This course offers a deep dive into programming and software development. Students learn coding basics, algorithms, data structures, and software tools. Students cover debugging and web development. This course gives students the skills to write programs and understand how software is built.
Blockly
Blockly is a tool for beginners looking to learn coding through a visual, block-based interface. Students learn key programming concepts like loops, conditions, and variables through its simple block-based system. Students develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills by creating programs without writing complex code.
NASA’s STEM
NASA’s STEM provides educational resources for students interested in space, science, and engineering. Students engage with hands-on activities like building model rockets, designing space habitats, and simulating planetary missions. Students explore topics such as astronomy, physics, and climate science through interactive lessons and experiments. Students participate in NASA challenges and virtual field trips. These resources help students grow and develop new skills.
OpenAI
OpenAI is a resource about artificial intelligence (AI). This resource has information about machine learning, neural networks, and AI models. Students visit it to learn new things about AI. Students also explore how AI is used in different fields. These fields include finance, robotics, healthcare, and others.
Students use these resources to better understand online STEM learning and make a choice about their future. Legacy Online School also helps guide you. Our school provides STEM-focused education and experienced teachers who will support students step by step.
