What Is the AP® Government and Politics Exam Format?

Students are asked to answer questions in two sections. We’ll look at each section in more detail below. Kids need to do well in both sections to get a strong overall score.

What Types of Questions Are on the AP Gov Exam?

Students see both multiple-choice and written questions. Each type checks different ways of thinking. Let’s take a detailed look at each section.

Section What It Includes? Time Score Weight
Multiple-Choice Questions on key ideas and political examples 80 mins 50%
Free-Response Four short written answers based on real cases 100 mins 50%

How Is the Exam Structured?

The exam has two parts. The first part gives short questions with answers to choose. The second part asks the student to write answers in their own words. Both parts carry equal weight in the final score. Legacy Online School gives students a full guide. Our lessons include practice tests with guidance from experts.

What Is the Exam Date for 2025?

This exam for 2025 is scheduled for Tuesday, May 6, at 12:00 p.m. local time.

How Is the AP® Government and Politics Exam Score Calculated?

The College Board combines the multiple-choice and free-response points. The raw total points are then converted to a final score between 1 and 5.

What Is the Scoring Scale for the AP Exam?

Each exam is scored from 1 to 5. These numbers match clear levels of performance.

Score What It Means?
5 Very strong performance
4 Strong performance
3 Passing performance
2 Weak understanding
1 No college recommendation

What Is the Average AP Score Distribution?

Let’s check the scores students got on this exam in 2024. We can see the average score this year was a score of 3.

AP Score 5 4 3 2 1
Student Score Percentages 16.0% 24.0% 33.0% 15.0% 12.0%

How Does the Score Calculator Work?

Preparing for an exam takes time and effort. Many students do not know if their knowledge is enough for the upcoming exam. An AP calculator can help kids by giving an estimated score based on their current knowledge. It also helps them see which topics and questions need more attention to achieve better results.

We will show how students can use this type of calculator with the Legacy Online School AP calculator. This calculator is free for all students and designed to be easy to use.

When students go to the calculator page, they will see all exam sections where they can enter the number of correct answers for each part. Students can adjust the slider in each section or enter values manually.

Once students enter their answers, the calculator will automatically calculate their AP score and display the result. Our calculator is updated based on the latest College Board changes, so the score shown will be as close as possible to the official result given after the real exam.

Students can also select the score curve, which allows them to see how different scoring scales may affect their final result. The score curve is based on past AP exams and helps students understand the difficulty level of different test years.

Let’s see an example of how to enter data into our calculator:

Field Instruction Example
Score Curve You can choose the year you need 2024
Section I: Multiple-Choice You enter the number of raw points you earned for correct answers from 0 to 55 55
Section II: Free Response You enter the number of raw points you earned for each question from 0 to 6 (for each subsections) 6

Check the data carefully when using the calculator because a mistake in the number of correct answers will lead to an incorrect AP score calculation.

If you are not happy with your current estimated AP score, look at the sections where you had incorrect answers. Working on these topics and questions will help you increase the number of correct answers and improve your AP score.

Legacy Online School’s teachers are happy to help you analyze the results shown by our calculator. They can also provide lessons to help you prepare better for the AP exam and get a high AP score.

What Is the Importance of AP® Scores in College Admissions?

“AP U.S. Gov is important not only for students to become “knowledgeable voters,” but also for developing “the skill set to maybe run for office themselves someday””

The Albion Pleiad

Such scores show how well students can deal with the workload of college. Colleges use these scores to assess the abilities of kids and can give them some benefits.

How Can AP Scores Impact College Credit?

Different colleges have different minimum AP scores for credit. Many colleges accept a 3 or higher. Selective colleges often need a 4 or 5.

Earning college credit also has several benefits:

  • Saving money
  • Graduating faster
  • Opening space for advanced courses

Here are examples of different colleges and the AP scores they require for college credit.

College Minimum AP Score
Harvard University 5
Stanford University 5
Boston University 4 or higher
New York University 4 or higher
University of California 4 or higher
Florida State University 3 or higher
Arizona State University 3 or higher

What Are Colleges Looking for in AP Exam Scores?

Colleges want to see growth and hard work. A student who takes AP classes and earns a passing score shows they can manage college-level work. Legacy Online School helps students choose AP subjects matching their future major.

Does a Higher Score Guarantee Admission to Selective Colleges?

How Can You Prepare for the AP® Government and Politics Exam?

“The AP Government and Politics Exam Questions do not scaffold in difficulty. The most challenging questions may be placed right before the easiest one on the test. This can be tricky for students that are expecting the first few questions to be a breeze”

CollegeVine

Students should practice a lot with both parts of the exam. Legacy Online School provides a weekly schedule and strong support from teachers to help every kid achieve the best result.
